Foreword by Greg Bowles
The true story of one woman's quest to bike 25,00 miles around the border of China.
About the author: Yu Juanjuan was born in China in 1958 and grew up during the social, political, and economic upheaval of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. In 1997, she moved to the United States and currently teaches classes on Chinese culture and language as well as arranging and leading customized heritage tours of her native country. She lives with her husband in Boulder, Colorado.
Details: Phil Wegener is Juanjuan's husband. Phil's father lived in Branford, CT where I am originally from. I met the couple through a mutual friend in 2007. When I moved to Boulder in 2008 we met up and Juanjuan told me of her amazing biking adventure traveling the perimeter of China in 1987. Her story of courage, physical strength and daring moved me. She had many family albums and was previously married to a photographer in Beijing so her life was amazingly well documented. Juanjuan had given many slide shows talks on her journey around China but the material wasn't in book form. I started working on producing this book in June 2008 by copying maps and photos from Juanjuan's various albums. Phil, Greg Bowles and myself interviewed Juanjuan to get her stories down on paper in English and to create captions for the photos. We hired multiple Chinese translators to interview Juanjuan to get more details and to make sure we had the facts correct. The book had two previous rounds of copyediting when we hired Sandra Jonas to do the final content editing, copyediting, and tweak the existing design. The book is print on demand and we have done 3 printings of 100 copies to date. Juanjuan gave an author talk at the Boulder Public Library in October 2017.
